Interesting Facts
  • J.W. Harris told Brandon Bates that he hopes all the scratches and dents are now done with and after his round one ride stated that he didn't get hit in the head so he guessed it was a success. However, move to round two when it was an all too familiar scene when he got caught up in his rope while riding Smooth Sailing. Harris was out of the 15/15 battle (replaced by Ryan Dirteater) after this beating that upset with riding elbow/funny bone/fingers. Harris was also out of all day three action. Dr. Tandy stated that Harris will go to an elbow specialist this coming week to have it looked at since he keeps losing feeling in his pinky and ring finger so he loses his griping abilities. Going forward Harris will probably wear a elbow brace.
  • Jeremiah (Rob Smets) was stated to be on the chopping block from the BFTS if he did not perform against J.B. Mauney in round one according to Cody Lambert. Jeremiah was successful on bucking J.B. but it is still unknown if this was enough to save his BFTS career.
  • Reese Cates got slammed between the chute and the bull (Big Cat) when he was bucked off in round one. Cates sustained a concussion from this accident. Cates is moving around fine however he did fail the concussion test and could not compete in round two.
  • Stormy Wing has yet to ride a bull in the 2016 BFTS season. It is possible if he doesn't get some point soon he could be off the BFTS and sent back to the BlueDEF tour.
  • J.B. Mauney did not show up to Saturday and Sunday nights performance. It was speculated during the PBRLive broadcast that he was sick or got food poisoning on Saturday night. On Sunday we got an update that he is still under the weather but feeling better. This is unlike J.B. that will ride no matter what - my prayers are with him that he is doing ok.
  • Cody Nance has joined the Copper Tires team and is now a Cooper Tires cowboy!
  • Nathan Schaper is battling a cold this weekend while competing.
  • Shane Proctor, mentor to Derek Kolbaba, was gleaming with pride after Kolbaba won the 15/15 bucking battle. Proctor stated that Kolbaba has an old cowboy soul. Proctor also made it known that he thought the score should have been higher - like a 91.00.
  • Sean Gleason on PBRLive stated that Robson Palermo is the best bull rider that never won a world championship. Palermo then stated that he will work his ass off for Sean to make that happen.
  • Emilio Resende is now out of injury exemption and most likely off the BFTS and back to BlueDEF to gain more points.
  • Guilherme Marchi was on Sunday due to left hip pointer and rib sprain sustained in round two. Marchi stated that he will be back next weekend.
Onto Sacramento, CA next weekend for the Sacramento Invitational. This stop will be an 2-day event. See y'all next weekend!!

Interesting Facts
  • Guilherem Marchi was back for his first event after saying at the World Finals he would take the year off to get knee surgery and heel up. Well he never got the knee surgery but that didn't seem to stop him. During the weekend he chatted with Brandon Bates multiple times and had some very interesting things to say including: calling himself and 'old' bull rider, stating he is scared to fix his knee even though Dr. Tandy is mad at him, saying it is hard to stay home while watching his friends because he loves what he does and that he is going to try and see what happens, and when it was all done and over he stated he has no pain in his keen after the long weekend. On his first bull out on Friday night he looked very rusty and it looked like his knee might have bothered him. But every ride forward he kept looking more and more like the World Champion Guilhereme Marchi we are use to seeing. He went 3-for-4 on the event and place fifth overall. He did however turn down all re-rides which was probably the best thing as he is just coming back. Hopefully his knee holds up though the season!
  • Derek Kolbaba completed in his first of five BFTS exemptions. He went 1-for-3 on the weekend. Lets hope he can come back stronger next weekend because this did not look like the same kid that won two BlueDEF stops, one Pro Tour stop, and placed second at the Ft. Worth Stock Show and Rodeo all in one week before coming to the BFTS.
  • Cooper Davis was back for the first time since his victory at the World Finals. Cooper went 2-for-4 on the weekend and placed eight overall. He stated that his hand was hurting earlier in the weekend for a little while after riding but by the end of weekend it appeared to not bother him anymore.
  • Matt Triplett was in the house and talked with Brandon Bates stating his recovery is coming along great and is excepted to return to action at Arlington, TX (Iron Cowboy).
  • Markus Mariluch was riding in his last BFTS injury exemption and it looks like he is probably back to the BlueDEF tour until he gets some more points to come back to the BFTS.
  • Shane Proctor had been battling the flu all week but still tried to cowboy up and made one qualified ride in round three.
  • Mike Lee chatted with Brandon Bates on Saturday about his round one win and like a good 'ole country boy stated "I don't like to think too much - I'm kind of a redneck like that." This is why we love Mike Lee - he keeps it real!
  • Silvano Alves and Joao Ricardo Vieira turned down re-ride options in round one. Silvano Alves said he did it because it was a three-day event.
  • Cody Lambert has put Pearl Harbor (Boyd / Floyd Bull Company) on his Top 10 watch list for bulls this season.
  • Douglas Duncan got hurt in round three action after bucking off Gangster Roll. He hopped out of the arena but you could tell he was in pain. Dr. Tandy stated that he has a dislocated big right toe and a possible ankle fracture. Douglas was transported to the hospital for x-rays. Prayers are with Douglas that it is just a dislocated big toe and that he will be back in action next weekend.
  • Frank Newsom (the fearless one) took a nasty hit protecting Kaique Pacheco in round three. Frank was taken out on the stretcher and back to sports med. Frank sustained a concussion and face lacerations. He is questionable for Anaheim next weekend. Prayer are with Frank that he is back next weekend and that its just some bumps and bruises.
  • ABBI Classic Event was held in round one showing casing 3 and 4 year old bucking bulls. One bull I am keeping an eye on is Comeback Wacked (Currey Creek Bucking Bulls & Cattle Co.) which is a son of Bushwacker! He bucked off Justin Paton in 5.52 seconds for a score of 42.75.
  • Bullfighters Only Event was held during intermission of round one. In this event bullfighters freestyle with bulls for 40-60 seconds. We will see more of this event at additional BFTS this season.

Onto to Anaheim, CA next weekend for the Anaheim Invitational. This stop will also be a 3-day event. See y'all next weekend!!

Interesting Facts
  • Guilherme Marchi last years event winner was on the long-go round one draw up until Thursday when he pulled back out of this event. At the 2015 World Finals Guilherme Marchi told all the fans that he planned on getting knee surgery and would probably be out most of the 2016 season. Well, Marchi has still not gotten that surgery and was planning on coming back at PBRNYC until he got on a practice bull and he felt pain in his knee again.
  • Paulo Ferreira Liam was at this event because he won a PBR BlueDef Tour stop getting an automatic bid. Shows that hard work and determination can go a long way!
  • Silvano Alves in round one took a beating from Rusty after making the 8 second whistle. Silvano Alves was knocked unconscious from getting his head stomped on by the bull. Silvano Alves sustained a concussion and scalp/facial contusions. But Alves's helmet was shattered. Alves was questionable for round two and three but Alves passed the concussion test and was cleared to ride. Silvano Alves actually had to borrow a fellow riders helmet so he could ride - which didn't phase him at all.
  • Ryan Dirteater was having an outstanding year until round two at Madison Square Garden. Up to this point he had ridden every bull he got on in the 2016 season. Sadly Ryan Dirteater only got one qualified ride at PBRNYC - bucking off two more bulls and only riding one (in round one).
  • Kaique Pacheco in round two matched up against Mac-Nett's Southern Wine. Rewind to one year ago at this same event, when Kaique Pacheco was just getting his name known on the BFTS circuit, Pacheco was bucked off this bull. Well one year later and a more confident Kaique Pacheco showed this bull who is the boss and rode him for 84.00 points.
  • Nathan Schaper shaves off his mustache (it was bad). But once shaving it off after round one he staying on all his bulls in round two, three, and championship round. I guess the mustache was the problem.
  • J.W. Harris took a beating in round two after getting bucked off Mishap when he got hung up and stepped on. This tough cowboy ended up with issues to his riding elbow, forearm stain, chest contusions, and upper back sprains. So he was out for round three and the championship round. J.W. Harris told Brandon Bates "you gotta use your head a little bit and know when you shouldn't get on a bull." Justin McBride also told Brandon Bates that J.W. Harris is one of the toughest bull riders ever. J.W. Harris is questionable for Oklahoma City.
  • Silvano Alves opted out of the championship round because of hip soreness.
  • Paulo Lima won $129,500 this weekend at PBRNYC. Lima is also the new No. 1 ranked bull rider in the world standings according to Justin Felisko.

Onto Oklahoma City next weekend for the Express Employment Professional Invitational. This stop will also be a 3-day event. See y'all next weekend!!

Interesting Facts
  • J.W. Harris has cut out all liquid carbs cold turkey. It is part of his plan to get back to his goal riding weight of around 145. This was the weight he was when he dominated the PRCA circuit winning 4 gold buckles. His goal for this year is to win both the PRB World Championship and PRCA Bull Rider of the Year.
  • Derek Kolbaba is out to win Rookie of the Year. He is excited to be part of the BFTS and can't wait to see what the year holds for him.
  • Cody Heffernan who is at this event due to top riders being out on injury this week stated that his primary goal this year is to claim the 2016 PBR Australia title and it is not to qualify for the BFTS full time this year.
  • Mike Lee is only 16 qualified rides away from hitting a career total of 500 qualified rides. He would become only the second PBR bull rider to do this. First to do this was Guilherme Marchi in 2014.
  • Silvano Alves hip is doing better after undergoing surgery and has been working out to get back into peak shape to be part of the race for the world title again this year.
  • Silvan Alves actually took a re-ride option? Unlike his strategy in past seasons he was quoted to saying "it is a new year." I wonder if this will be his philosophy all season - only time will tell.
  • J.B. Mauney doesn't get the birthday present he wanted. Saturday was J.B. Mauney birthday and a great birthday present would have been 8 seconds on Wipeout. But, things didn't go as planned and at 7.39 seconds J.B. Mauney got tossed off.
  • Ryan Dirteater states that the PBR has made him a "climate control" bull rider.
  • Douglas Duncan a few minutes before his championship round ride told Brandon Bates that he never shows up to take 2nd and that he expects himself to win. Douglas continues with "I've wanted a world title all my life." When Brandon asks Douglas what he has to do now, Douglas replies with "time to do what cowboys are supposed to do." I know Douglas can be a top 10 bull rider - so he just needs to shake off the bull in the championship round and get focused for next weekend!

Onto New York City next weekend for the first PBR Major of the season for the Buck Off At The Garden. It will be the first 3-day PBR BFTS stop of the season. It will also be the first 15/15 bucking battle of the year. And, just announced  there will be a $25k bonus bull in the championship round. See y'all next weekend!

PBR Basics - Updated Points System

Just as the 2016 PBR Built Ford Tough Series is about the start the newly appointed Executive Competition Committee has revised the PBR world standing points system. These changes will go Ito effect immediately starting with the Chicago Invitiational.

Point System Revisions

At three-day BFTS events the event aggregate/average winner will be awarded 500 world standing point which is 100 more than at a two-day event.

In the past round points were awarded to riders finishing in the Top-5 of a round at BFTS event. Now points will be awarded to the Top-7 round finishers at BFTS events.

During 15/15 Bucking Battles (8 currently scheduled during the BFTS) points will be given to Top-7 finishers as well.

The PBR World Finals will now have more emphasis with round points being awarded to an extended number of placings. The Top-10 finishers in each round and the Top-10 finishers in the event aggregate/average will now receive points.

PBR Basics - The Cowboys' Accessories

Since we are days away from the start to the 2016 PBR Built Ford Tough Series let's make sure everyone understands the basics of PBR and bull riding.

The Cowboys' Accessories:

Chaps: The leather chaps help protect the cowboy's legs from both the bull and the steel chutes. But these custom-made chaps are also used to bring the judges' attention to his legwork.

Boots:  Bull riders wear boots that have a special ridge on the heel which helps the spurs stay in place. You will often see bull riders tie up there boots to prevent them from being pulled off during the ride.

Spurs: The spurs help the rider stay in position on the bull. But don't worry the rowels are dull so they don't injure or cut the skin of the bull. Extra points can be earned during a ride by "spurring" the bull as it shows a level of control during the ride.

Headgear: Many cowboys choose to wear only a cowboy hat out of a sense of tradition. But, beginning with the 2013 season, any rider born on or after October 15. 1994, is required to wear a protective helmet. The PBR leaves the choice of headwear up to any of its riders born before this date. However, over 50 percent of the PBR riders choose to wear a helmet and/or face mask to help protect them from head injuries.

Mouthpiece: Bull riders wear a protective mouthpiece to help reduce teeth damage that results from the jarring action of bull bucking and the impact with the bull or the ground.

Protective Vest: Fun fact...the vest was invented by PBR Livestock Director and former bull rider Cody Lambert. The vest serves two main purposes: it absorbs shock and dissipates the blow to the body, while protecting the torso from threatening punctures caused by direct contact with the bull's hooves and horns.

Glove: Bull riders wear a leather glove on their riding hand to protect their hand and fingers from the intense pressure and friction of the bull rope during the ride. It is secured around the wrist with tape to keep it from being torn off by the tremendous force of the bull.

Bull Rope: The bull rope is a flat rope braided from nylon or grass that goes around the Bulls chest behind his front legs. The rope has a handle braided into it constructed partially of leather, which is the bull rider's only anchor for the duration of the ride. The rider runs the rope through his fingers and grips it to keep it tight around the bull. At the bottom of the rope hangs a metal bell designed to give the rope some weight so that it will fall off the bull as soon as the rider is bucked off or dismounts the bull. The bell has smooth, round edges and does not harm the bull in any way.

Rosin: This is a sticky substance that riders use to gain extra grip. You'll often see riders rubbing it into their ropes before riding.
